OHP Portfolio

Over my four years at Ohio University, I participated in a number of extra- and co-curriculars that culminated in my Honors Program portfolio. Below are the summaries of my classes and projects.

Year 1

COMM 2400

I took a weekly class with my cohort of Innovation Scholars under the instruction of Dean Scott Titsworth. In this class, we learned about community engagement by interacting directly with a local non-profit.

COMM 2400 Project

We identified a number of successful non-profit social media pages to assist the Athens-based Sugar Bush Foundation in establishing an online presence and connecting with other local organizations.

GLC 2010

I began the Global Leadership Certificate through the Center for International Studies in fall 2021. The first class focused on cross-cultural communication and aiding local food bank Cat's Cupboard in a food drive campaign.

HC 2401

In spring 2022, I participated in an OHP course that assisted the Valpo Surf Project with developing social media for their organization in Chile. We discussed design learning and delivered a final presentation with recommendations.

Year 2

COMM 2420

In fall 2022, our Innovation Scholars cohort got to create our own project. I attempted to create a joint website for OU comedy groups Fridays Live and Black Sheep Improv, but ultimately failed to get funding to launch it.

GLC 3010

For the third semester of the GLC certificate, we discussed sustainability in international alliances. I presented a project about local alliances tackling environmental issues, including Zero Waste and the Voinovich School.

FILM 4930

I screened narrative short films for the Athens International Film + Video Festival in the fall. We watched 10 a week and broke them down with the festival director, selecting the best to showcase in the festival.

ENGIn Volunteering

Over summer 2022, I began volunteering with the ENGIn program, which connects native English speakers with Ukrainian students desiring to learn English and American culture. I was paired with Tanya, who I tutored for a little over a year and a half.

AIFS Study in Prague

I spent the spring 2023 semester in Prague, Czech Republic, studying Central and Eastern European Studies at Charles University. I traveled around the region and got to know more about Czech film.

Why Prague?

I always knew I wanted to study abroad again after being an exchange student in high school, I just didn't know where. The Czech Republic was interesting to me, as I had never visited a country that was previously part of the Soviet Union. I wanted to study a Slavic language, learn about communist history, and experience urban life in a historic capital. I had a fantastic time learning about central European art and film, and I really feel I got to know the city during my time there. The metro and streetcars are superb, the buildings are majestic, and the blossoming of the city in spring makes up for the cold months of winter. I was quite happy to read Milan Kundera and get my head inside the Czech psyche for a few months, even if it meant leaving OU for the semester. I met one of my best friends at Charles University, and we're now planning more international travel together. Europe is manifold in its stories, and I felt I subverted some expectations with my takeaways – Prague's significant Vietnamese population actually created a renewed interest in Southeast Asia. I went back to OU and started taking Thai.

Transitions Internship

While in Prague, I completed a part-time internship with Transitions, a media outlet focusing on Central and Eastern Europe. My experience as a solutions journalism intern allowed me to interview several filmmakers from the One World Film Festival.

Fridays Live

I had been contributing to OU's resident sketch comedy show Fridays Live since my freshman year. In my junior year, I returned as a co-producer to try and return the show to its former glory.

COMM 3400

In my third Innovation Scholars cohort, I created a project comparing French comedy films to their respective American remakes. Verdict: it depends.

T3 4400

In spring 2024, I participated in a seminar on wealth and poverty under Dr. Kim. As a combination of domestic undergrads and international graduate students, we discussed the origins of rhetoric about poverty and contrasted its development in the Global North versus the Global South.

FILM 4930

I again participated in a course to support the Athens International Film + Video Festival in its 2024 iteration. This time, I served on the social media team, creating Instagram reels and graphics.

Why AIFVF?

My work with AIFVF has inspired my participation in and attendance at other film festivals around the country. AIFVF is special in that its selections are Academy-qualifying, so films we screen here are eligible for the short film categories at the Oscars. Athens is a funky town. Despite its remoteness from major airports, it attracts artists from across the world when their films are selected. I am working with the festival again for the 52nd edition, and it's my hope that no matter my full-time job upon graduation, I can continue to engage with the festival circuits. I believe film can bring people together, and helping out with AIFVF proves supremely motivating in that longer-term quest. I am grateful to David Colagiovanni for supporting my interest and testing my abilities in various developmental departments.

Year 4

HC 4950

My final course with my Innovation Scholars cohort is my website reflection on my past four years at OU.

Scripps Innovation Scholars

The Scripps Innovation Scholars program was a key reason for my decision to attend Ohio University. I was certain that I would be venturing to the United Kingdom, as I was determined to challenge myself with distance. When one of the Innovation Scholars selection team reached out to offer me a personal tour, I was grateful. To be identified as a student not only worth recruiting but also given time ahead of my acceptance helped me realize what I was actually looking for in higher education: an active community. Of course, I was thrilled by the prospect of having a class instructed by the dean, and it certainly helped that I met two of my future roommates in my cohort before class even started, but there's a more significant dimension to the small group of scholars. The experiences of the group have come to feel like collective memory. Just as I've enjoyed working on my projects, I've enjoyed witnessing my fellow students' journeys, and seeing how we can support one another in our long-term goals.
This gathering of ambitious students has defined my OU experience and my experience in academia more broadly. Dean Titsworth, Paula Linscott, and Beth Novak have all consistently served as resources and friendly faces around Schoonover Center. My aspirations, beyond a basic desire to promote storytellers, remain wide-ranging and I've thus appreciated the fluidity of the program in accommodating my many interests. Some projects have been successful (an international remake film comparison), others have been dead ends (a planned website for OU comedy groups). Most importantly, however, I have learned and grown in the company of my peers.

OHP

My journey through the OHP program was not dictated by following traditional course recommendations. I was lucky to be able to pick and choose the experiences that best catered to my interests, including the unique programming of the Global Leadership Certificate and the seminar on Wealth and Poverty. It was amazing to have my horizons expanded through discussion of international issues and their geography-based explanations (a major reason why I picked up my geography minor in my second year of undergrad).

OHP gave me an outlet to reflect on these opportunities and factor them into my grander narrative as an OU student. I have adored the professors I've been able to study under and the resource networks I've been provided to develop personal projects. My website, Buffed Film Buffs, has OHP faculty to thank for spreading the word to student contributors and providing feedback for areas of improvement. I had already fulfilled my requirements prior to my experience attending Cannes Film Festival, traveling to Thailand and spending a summer as a Washington intern with Scripps in D.C. However, despite their lack of formal inclusion, their reality has been in part supported by the OHP program. I am grateful I now have a record of these special projects and a staff I can stay in touch with even after graduation.
